| CINEMA & THEATRE The cinema/theatre was established sometime in the 1960s and seats up to 300 audience members. To this day, the community of Barentsburg is passionate about hosting and attending cultural events and concerts presented by the community as well as kids from the school, directed and curated by Aidar Hanbekov, head of the Culture Centre. Furthermore the Cinema is in full working condition with screenings almost every weekend of both new and old movies. |
| PROJECTORS The two Xenon 3M projectors we have are Soviet film projectors and were manufactured in 1968. They are the 2nd oldest projectors in Svalbard and it is incredible that they survived and are still fully functional! The projectors were restored last year after not being used for 30 years. A unique feature of these projectors is that they use electric vacuum tubes to reproduce and amplify sound, resulting in an authentic and smooth old movie sound. |
| FILM ARCHIVE The films stocked in the archive are mostly from the Soviet Union days, readily available for viewing. Some are quite old, such as "Alexander Nevsky" by Sergei Eisenstein, which is stored on flammable film. Occasionally, foreign films like "Cabaret" by Bob Fosse were shown back in the day in Barentsburg, typically dubbed into Russian or Norwegian. There are some rare films, particularly older ones from the 1930s and 1940s, still preserved in our film stock archive room. |
