Longyearbyen is the Norwegian capital of Svalbard. It is the northernmost populated area with approximately 2400 inhabitants and a variety of around 50 nationalities. Longyearbyen was founded and named after John Longyear in 1906. This is a town with a particular temper that has been loved by adventurers, explorers, fans of the North and wilderness.
DAY 1
- Pick up from your place of accommodation in Longyearbyen to our expedition center Russkiy Dom
In the expedition center Russkiy Dom the guide will get you familiar with the safety instructions during the sea passage and will help you to fit the equipment and get ready for departure.
- Departure by open Polarcirkel boats to Barentsburg by route: Longyearbyen – Grumant – Colesbay – Barentsburg.
Embark on a scenic journey from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg aboard the open Polarcirkel boat, traversing the breathtaking Isfjorden, aptly named "Ice Fjord." Delve into the rich history of the first Russian mining town on Svalbard, Grumant, and Colesbay, founded at the dawn of the 20th century—a pivotal moment in Russian mining development. Witness remnants of their interconnectedness through a historic railroad, used for coal transportation, still visible from the sea. Weather permitting, we'll dock near these towns at the hut of Vladimir Rusanov, offering a glimpse into the past. Along the way, marvel at majestic bird-cliffs and keep an eye out for whales and dolphins gracing the fjord's waters.

Barentsburg, often referred to as the Russian "capital" of Svalbard, embodies a tapestry of Arctic tales woven by Dutch explorers, Russian and Norwegian trappers, American and German merchants, adventurers, Soviet visionaries, and Russian miners. Established in 1921 by the Dutch as a coal-mining settlement, Barentsburg has been under the administration of the State Trust "Arcticugol" since 1931. Today, it is home to approximately 500 residents, each contributing to the rich history and unique character of this Arctic outpost.
The Polarcirkel, an 8-meter-long vessel meticulously crafted by Norwegian shipbuilders, is tailored for Arctic marine passages. With a powerful Yamaha engine (200 HP) and advanced equipment, including echo sounders and emergency beacons, these boats ensure safe navigation. For added safety and comfort, we provide specialized Arctic rescue suits by renowned Norwegian brand Hansen.
Barentsburg Husky Farm stands as a charming haven in Barentsburg, boasting 80 doghouses nestled along the shores of Grønfjorden against the stunning backdrop of the Esmark glacier (Esmarkbreen). Recognizing the diversity of North sled dog breeds and their significant role in Arctic exploration and dog sledding, we embarked on a mission to establish a kennel encompassing all Arctic sled dog breeds. Today, our Husky Farm remains unmatched, offering a unique experience in the Arctic wilderness.

Prepare for an unforgettable hike through diverse terrain, where the raw beauty of the Arctic wilderness surrounds you. Listen closely to the melodic voices of the Esmarkbreen glacier, and feel the pulse of the Arctic as it resonates through your soul.
Depending on weather conditions, your journey may include a stop in Trygghamna, offering easy yet diverse hiking trails amidst tundra landscapes and rugged mountains. Explore the enchanting Alkhornet mountain, home to one of the largest bird cliffs in the fjord, before concluding your adventure at the captivating cape Festningen, where a majestic rock fortress awaits, illuminated by the guiding light of a nearby lighthouse. Prepare to be awe-inspired by the wonders of the Arctic as you embark on this unforgettable journey.

The Starostin Hut bears the name of Ivan Starostin, a legendary Pomor trapper who made Svalbard his home for over 30 winters. Situated near Russekeila Bay, by the Linne Lake and River, this humble abode was once part of one of the largest trappers' settlements on the island. Alongside fellow Pomors, Starostin braved the harsh Arctic conditions, welcoming visits from companions and family from the mainland, as he carved out a life amidst the untamed wilderness of Svalbard.

Explore the world's sole operational coal mine accessible for guided tours. Witness the intricate synergy between humanity and nature, delving into the depths of the earth and observing the mechanisms of mining operations and reinforcement techniques. Led by a seasoned miner, gain invaluable firsthand insights into the workings of this industrial marvel.
